Papers, 1792-1838.

This collection contains a diary, correspondence, and documents of John William Stiles, 1792-1838. The diary is primarily a record of his travels throughout Massachusetts, visits by and with his friends, especially his father-in-law Dr. Thaddeus Maccarty (1747-1802), several personal accounts, and a brief autobiography revolving around his activities in Keene and Templeton. The folder contains genealogical notes, a copy of the will of his wife Mary Maccarty Stiles, letters Stiles wrote to her in 1812 while he was serving as Representative (with references to anti-war proceedings in the Massachusetts House), and several letters to his daughter, Lydia, while she was attending boarding school in Keene. Also among his correspondence are letters from Emory Washburn (1800-1877) with his lengthy legal opinion on a disputed contract; letters from Rev. Festus Foster (1776-1846) containing quotations in code with translation and his belief in the need to Christianize the Indians; and detailed medical receipts prescribed for Stiles' ailing wife.
